Cala Saona

Cala Saona

The smallest and most beautiful beach in Formentera dominates the west coast of the island. It is a wide sandy beach surrounded by high cliffs, forests and large hotels. It has shallow warm waters, low dunes and it features the most picture perfect sunset views.

Cala Saona is referred to as the jewel of the west coast of Formentera and it is one of the islands most popular beaches. It is between Punta Rasa in the south and Calo d’en trull in the north, in a narrow cove. This family friendly beautiful cove with the shape of a horseshoe has thin white sand and warm turquoise waters that shimmers most especially in the summer. A great place to relax and enjoy water sports.

Type: Sandy Beach

Cala Saona beach is 140 meters long and 120 meters wide. This white sandy beach lies within a small bay surrounded by red rocks. Although there are a few beachside restaurants, it is very much an oasis for peace and relaxation.

Its horseshoe shape protects it from currents making it a perfect place for sunbathing and snorkeling and its location gives its visitors the best place to watch the sun go down over the horizon as it sets over the water. And the picturesque scenery from the rocks above is something to try when you visit this beach. There is a row of quaint wooden boot-houses on one side of the beach. Plenty of sun loungers and parasols are available for rent.

How to get there:

Geo: 38°41’39.6″N 1°23’04.8″E

There are several ways to get there, but the best way is by a chartered yacht jumping straight to its turquoise waters.

One option is also to ride a bicycle which is the choice for the many. If you start from La Savina port, follow the path that leads southwards, among pines and stone walls, through the most rural part of the island.

The other choice is to take the road to Cap de Barbaria from Sant Francesc where you can find a signposted turn-off halfway along the road to the west. There is a wide car park at the end of the asphalt road, with convenient access to the beach.

A wooden pathway from the parking lot leads you to the hotel and into the large dunes of soft sand.

Did you know?

Being in a sheltered location, it was used in the past to build several boathouses to protect the traditional llauts, giving a special charm to this particular site.

What to see:
