Benirràs

Benirràs

In Ibiza, there are beaches and coves famous for their unique character, and Benirràs is certainly one of them. You may have seen or heard about a beach where people gather to play drums at sunset — that place is Benirràs.

Located near the village of Sant Miquel in the north of the island, Benirràs is a truly beautiful and special spot. In the 1970s, the hippie community began the tradition of gathering here to play drums as the sun sets, especially on Sundays. Over the years, this ritual has become one of the island’s most iconic and unmissable experiences, frequently featured in travel guides.

Identity card:

Type: Sandy Beach

Benirrás is a lovely sandy beach having one of the best sunsets on the island, as well as a crystal and shallow water. Although there is plenty of space to throw in a towel and relax, thank’s to it’s 160 meters in length and 40 meters in wide, on Sundays, it can be very crowded and the services get saturated.

ABecause it is such a famous beach, the Sant Joan town council has equipped Benirràs with excellent facilities, including showers, toilets, lifeguards, a wheelchair ramp, waste bins, a bus stop, restaurants, bars, and water sports activities.

How to get there:

Geo: 39º089533 N / 1º453763 E

Benirràs is about 22–25 km from Ibiza Town and can be reached by car, motorcycle, taxi, or bus. From Ibiza, take the E-10 road north and follow the signs for Sant Joan/Sant Miquel; once you arrive in Sant Miquel, follow the signs to Benirràs. Parking is usually available near the beach from Monday to Friday, but on weekends—especially Sundays—access can be restricted due to crowds, so visitors may need to park further away and take a shuttle bus. Bus line 23 also connects Ibiza Town to the Benirràs area during the summer season, and taxis typically cost around €30–€45 depending on traffic.

Did you know?

In 2010, a terrible wildfire destroyed a large area near Benirràs, very close to the beach. The fire lasted for twelve days and affected around 400 hectares, forcing approximately 1,500 people to evacuate. The island’s nature suffered greatly, especially because Ibiza’s dry summer conditions make wildfires more likely. That is why it is essential not to throw cigarette butts from cars, not to start fires during the summer, and not to leave glass or other litter in green areas.

What to see:

Grab your snorkeling gear and dive into the marine world of Benirràs. The water here is so clean and crystalline that, when you swim near the rocky areas, you can admire colorful fish all around you. If you can, stay in the water as the sun sets behind the rock that rises from the sea—Cap Bernat, the beach’s iconic landmark. Locals call it the “Finger of God”.

What to do:

Bring a drum or percussion and join in as the sun begins to set — you don’t need to be a musician. The rhythm is something we all carry in our collective spirit. Just follow the beat and keep playing; you won’t be the only one. Get up and dance to the drumbeat — in Ibiza, nobody judges.

For accommodation, you can rent a fantastic villa with three bedrooms, a jacuzzi, TV, fully equipped kitchen, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and a beautiful garden—all within walking distance of the beach.

If you want to go shopping, visit Elements Boutique, where the boho style is very popular in Ibiza. Every day at Benirràs there is a hippie market where you can find handmade clothes, accessories, jewelry, and shoes in a true hippie style.

Tips:

If you really want to experience the famous drumming festival at sunset in Benirràs, we recommend avoiding Sundays during high season. Although people gather every day to play for the sunset, Sundays attract the largest crowds. If you do go on a Sunday and arrive by car, you may need to park in a remote lot and take a shuttle bus to the beach, as space on the sand and in the restaurants is extremely limited. For a more relaxed experience with room to enjoy the beach and its facilities, choose another day of the week.
