Tony Pikes, known as Mr. Pikes, is an English man known for being a legend, an icon, an entrepreneur, a hedonist, a storyteller, an entertainer, a gentleman, a businessman, among more flattering descriptions. But most of all he is known to be the visionary who acquired the Pikes Ibiza Hotel in the late 70’s when he arrived to the white isle in 1978 to find a home.
After traveling and sailing by far seas, Tony wanted to buy a house in Santa Eulalia but suddenly spotted a run-down ramshackle 500-year old Finca for sale in the hills of San Antonio. The property had no electricity, no running water and was completely uninhabitable. He was looking for a new kind of lifestyle in the sunny European side and had made this Finca his own when he knew the house was called ‘Can Pep Toniet’ which means ‘the house of little Tony’. Tony used his hands to bring the Finca back to life and, finally on July 4, 1980, he launched the ‘official’ opening of Pikes.
In 1983, director Simon Napier-Bell was touring the island to shoot a video with George Michael. Here is where he found Pikes and changed Tony’s forever.
Many of celebrities became regular and lifelong guests. Mr. Pike’s Friends include A-list celebrities such as Julio Iglesias, Freddie Mercury, Mike Oldfield, Joan Baez, Frank Zappa, Boy George, Kylie Minogue, Robert Plant, Bon Jovi, and many superstars DJs. In 2010 the Ibiza Rocks Group started to run the business because Tony was set to retire and had sold the property to them after five years. On February 24, 2019, Tony Pikes passed away, just three days after his 85th birthday.
Fortunately Pikes had continue to keep the Balearic spirit, magic and surreal atmosphere it was known for. It continued the parties, live music and celebrations.
