Declared as a Natural Reserve in 1995 and in 2001, the Las Salinas or Ses Salines Natural Park is one of the most attractive spots in Ibiza. This Natural Park has more than 2,752 hectares of land including the beaches Ses Salines, Es Cavallet and Es Codolar and 13,000 marine hectares. A long stretch of fine-grain golden sand, clean and turquoise shallow water. It’s one of the most amusing, trendiest and most recognized beaches in Ibiza. Ses Salines actually is a lively beach with young atmosphere.

Ses Salines beach is part of the Natural Park, on the San José, municipality. It takes its name because it is in the area where the salt has been extracted for hundreds of years. It starts over Ses Portes Tower, finishes in Sa Canal port. It’s one and a half kilometers in length and from 25 to 30 meters in width. On almost the entire shore of the sea, there is little depth. The water is clean and clear thanks to the marine plant Oceanic Posidonia which oxygen the Mediterranean sea. When the wind comes from the southwest, this beach is a bit windy and wavy.

How to get there:

This paradise is around 12 kilometers from Dalt Vila, the epicenter of Ibiza, 7 kilometers from the touristic beach Playa d’en Bossa and 8 kilometers from the airport. A taxi from Ibiza town is approximately €15, and the bus line routes are L11 or L11B Eivissa – Ses Salines where the last bus stop is at the beach parking. If you drive from Ibiza Town, take the main road E-20 through the airport. The roundabout has a marked direction Platja Ses Salines, take this road forward, go pass the salt marshes on the the right, few meters after is a sharp curve with a sign indicating the way to Ses Salines beach.
Did you know?
Salt has been a vital exportation product in Spain. In the Pitiusas, white gold has more than 25 centuries of history. It was around the year 600 B.C when the Carthaginians started to exploit the salt marshes in Ibiza. In the 13th century with the Catalan conquest, the technics of the explosion improved. Thanks to the salt business, Ibiza University was financed.
In the 19th century, the Society Factory of the Sales of Ibiza acquired it investing in a better engineer production, adding three ports and a train. Thanks to these improvements, production increased from 6,000 tons per year to 55,000 in just two decades. Up to this day, the major buyers are Holland, the United Kingdom and Denmark. You can learn more about this exciting part of the Ibiza history in the Center of Interpretation of Ses Salines in the Church of Sant Francesc I. The Ses Salines Natural Park was declared a Patrimony of Humanity by the UNESCO in 1999.
What to see:
Platja Ses Salines beach is part of the more than 2,752 land hectares of the Ses Salines Natural Park. Here you have many options to do. To the birdwatchers, this is a treasure to discover, over 210 species of bird’s rest and nest in their migrations. This zone is the house of birds such as cuellinegros, zampullines, storks, herons, ospreys, peregrine falcons, little ringed plovers, black-winged stilts. But, the flamingos are the most quintessential birds of the park, hundreds of them migrate from August to the salt lagoons of the park.
On the Ses Salines road, few kilometers before the Es Cavallet entrance, is the parish of Sant Francesc, next to it is the Interpretation Center of the Natural Park of Ses Salines. In this center, you can know more about the Ibiza salt history, the native flora, and fauna.
What to do:
You can take a walk to the Ses Portes Tower, a beautiful viewpoint between the shores of Ses Salines and Es Cavallet. The tower was built in 1749 as part of the defensive system against pirate incursions. Ses Portes Tower is the closest point to the stunning Formentera, from where you can realize how this both islands separated millions of years ago.
The walk to the tower is very common for the locals in winter. On this short journey, you will pass by Cala Pluma where you will encounter a number of small coves sit and relax, see the dunes and juniper trees and the turquoise see is on the left, the water is perfect for taking a dip and snorkeling.
La Nave Salinas is at the end of Ses Salines beach; it was built to create jobs during the post-civil war crisis in Spain in 1941. The Colombian art collector Lio Malca discovered the building in 2015 and transformed it into a dynamic exhibition space. Famous artist as Kenny Scharf, Bill Viola, Marco Brambilla, Keith Haring, Kaws had exhibitions in La Nave Salinas.

Beso Beach
Beso Beach opened in 2018; this is the third beach restaurant of Beso group who opened first in Formentera and the second in Tulum, Mexico. The concept of Beso Ibiza is Mediterranean and Basque fusion cuisine, as well as the tasty drinks and cocktails. The restaurant has an elegant tropical decoration, comfortable sunbeds, cool music played by the resident DJs.

Sa Trinxa
Sa Trinxa origins date back to the 1980s, Ses Salines beach was a popular spot for the hippies. This restaurant was their meeting point before the arrival of electronic music. Fresh seafood is the identity card in this restaurant, as well as Haute fusion cuisine, healthy plates and drinks, cocktails. In this beach, the DJs are main characters, of course, Sa Trinxa has resident DJs to create a fun atmosphere.
